Word Crunching

The dictionary defines number crunching as “performing mathematical operations to find a value”.

It assumes the mathematical operations are done on numbers. But in modern Natural Language Processing (NLP) the first step of the processing encodes words into numbers (normally high dimensional vectors). Then very elaborate mathematical operations (e.g. supervised deep learning) are performed to find the business value of words.

So NLP is Word Crunching.
